CDP concurrently developed a sensor housing and an automated assembly/packaging line in 6 months.

Which came first the chicken or the egg? Do you build a fully automated production system at financial risk depending on successful product trials or accept a technical risk at an early stage with hand built samples?

CDP offered the capability to develop concurrently a sensor housing and an automated assembly/packaging line for Cambridge technology company Smart Holograms as a one stop shop for new product production trials against aggressive timescales.

The Smart Holograms sensor responds to minute quantities of moisture by changing colour to highlight the presence of water in aviation fuel. This is a common but potentially fatal problem. Smart Holograms now own a proven product and packaging line capable of 2000 sensors per hour. The system and sensor housing were designed, manufactured, assembled and tested within 6 months.

Skills Deployed
• Detailed product development
• Production engineering
• Scientific product testing
• Quality Assurance procedure

Technical Highlights
• Humidity controlled packaging
• High precision tooling
• Production line management
• Shaker table design

CDP created an isotopic personal dosimeter (IPD) to monitor radiation for homeland security services.

With 9/11 ‘Homeland Security’ was suddenly front page news opening the market to new Radiation detection systems. Radiation Watch approached CDP to help them develop and commercialise their isotopic dosimeter technology.

Alongside the research and engineering we developed a business case to encourage distributors to adopt and sell a revolutionary technology. The project called on all CDP’s skills to develop a working prototype in just 4 months and develop production test and calibration systems with giga-becquerel sources to meet the IAEA requirements. A further product version was then developed to broaden the market offer.

Skills Deployed
· Industrial Design
· Semiconductor Technology
· Nuclear Physics
· High voltage electronics
· Mathematical modelling

Technical Highlights and ‘World Firsts’
· The first spectrographic IPD
· Lightweight, rugged and wearable
· Bluetooth Interface

Radiation Watch now have a unique technology linked to a service business in calibrating devices which offers distributors the opportunity to generate long term income.

Innovative thinking produced an award-winning remote controlled luminaire at a competitive price point.

p style=”text-align: left;”>Customers in the hospitality industry wanted a low cost, easy to operate remote control luminaire that could quickly reconfigure the lighting in a room, changing layouts quickly and easily.

Previous manufacturers in this sector had failed to get the cost benefit equation right. What was needed was a new approach. A low cost remote controlled light that was better suited to market requirements.

By thinking beyond the specification, CDP’s breakthrough was to house all the mechanics in just two components within an aluminium die-casting. This ensured fast, easy and thus economical assembly.

Skills Deployed
• Industrial design, electronic design
• Embedded control software development, production engineering
• Prototype manufacture, project management
• Production sourcing and implementation in China

Highlights
• Subtle, clean-lined styling
• Low manufacturing cost without compromising quality
• Designed for Far East manufacture
• Robust and easy to use remote control
