Innovative technology and design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership today announces that it has worked with global print technology specialist Domino Printing Sciences plc, to create a technically advanced enclosure for the recently launched A520i printer. The new design fully seals the printer from dust and contamination whilst retaining excellent print performance in extreme temperatures - making it suitable for a variety of harsh production environments.
The A520i is the first continuous inkjet printer in Domino’s range to incorporate an innovative plenum airflow cooling system, developed by Cambridge Design Partnership, which ensures that both the ink system and the electronics stay cool whatever the production environment. This removes the need for external cooling air connections which some designs require, whilst allowing the new enclosure to be engineered to meet IP66 sealing requirements.
Domino identified the market opportunity for a printer to operate in extreme environments and began developing a prototype, establishing a vision for the A520i. Cambridge Design Partnership was appointed to assist because of their experience in designing robust industrial systems and their long track record in resolving difficult engineering challenges. They supported the Domino team by developing key system elements including thermal and electromagnetic management and environmental sealing.
Cambridge Design Partnership used thermal modelling to ‘virtually’ test a range of creative thermal management concepts and enclosure layouts to identify optimum ways of getting heat out of a high performance but environmentally sealed product. This testing inspired the creation of the novel plenum airflow cooling system.
Working closely with Domino, the team ensured that the ink refill was easily accessed by users while maintaining rugged IP66 sealing and an EMC solution to meet the challenging FCC Class B standard.
Finally Cambridge Design Partnership refined the product user experience by conducting key stakeholder interviews which led to simplifications including a cleaner appearance and a number of usability improvements. The result was a highly flexible and easy-to-use product.
Curtis Boon, Project Manager, Domino said: “Cambridge Design Partnership were brought on board to extend our resources during a busy period within our own R&D operation. Their team successfully integrated with our own, the professionalism and approach to problems was outstanding. Their way of working is fresh and energetic, they have a great depth of skill-sets and were able to help us progress towards our goals in a number of key areas. The A520i has generated a real buzz with our customers and we have created a product which fully meets their needs.”
Matt Brady, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Cambridge Design Partnership said: “The new printer design has enabled Domino to broaden its product offering and differentiate itself in the market by adding unparalleled flexibility, enhanced performance and robustness to its existing range. Our expertise meant that we could support Domino with the specialist technology, design and integration of a high-performance system packaged in an enclosure that is secure against water and dust. As well as being designed specifically for harsh environments the clean stainless steel aesthetic, stackability and flexibility in the positioning of the user interface means that end users can fit the printer into their existing production environments really easily – minimising disruption, and reducing cost and improving usability.”
