The new 360o sealer™ locks in odour and is designed for 1-handed use
Innovative technology and design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership today announces that it has been working with internationally renowned, award winning baby products manufacturer, Tommee Tippee® to develop a breakthrough nappy disposal system.
The new 360o sealer™ disposal system uses cartridges containing a novel antimicrobial adhesive film to individually seal nappies, helping to lock odour. The innovative range of features resulted from extensive user research, creative design and engineering, and combines enhanced performance, safety and aesthetics in a new design aimed at vastly improving a parent or carer’s nappy disposal experience.
Cambridge Design Partnership was approached by Mayborn Group, owners of the Tommee Tippee® and Sangenic® brands in April 2012 and tasked with turning a basic engineering roller rig and a sample of unique film technology into their next generation nappy disposal product. The collaborative design process saw close integration between Cambridge Design Partnership’s industrial design and engineering teams and Tommee Tippee®’s own internal R&D team, from concept design right through to tooling trials in Asia.
Cambridge Design Partnership’s unique combination of industrial design, usability and mechanical engineering expertise enabled them to design the user interface and overall aesthetic, as well as a challenging indexed gear train, roller and clutch mechanism. The team also assisted with Intellectual Property protection, and liaised closely with toolmakers during the tooling development.
Ideal for multi-tasking parents, the 360o sealer™ is designed to deliver clear improvements such as enhanced odour management, but also meet unmet needs of parents identified during early user research (easy to operate, better height, and easier emptying). Unlike competitor products, the system does not require the user to push their hand inside, making disposal more hygienic.
Matt Brady, Senior Engineer, Cambridge Design Partnership commented: “Through understanding the ergonomic dexterity and usability considerations of both adults and children, features such as the safety catch on the lid were carefully designed to be more challenging for children to open, but comfortably allow one-handed use by adults.”
Ben Strutt, Partner and Head of Design, Cambridge Design Partnership said: “Over the past year, we’ve formed a strong relationship with Mayborn Group. The joint team has worked successfully to develop a ‘system product’ – comprising platform device plus ‘consumable’ film – which is game-changing as a result. The opportunity to apply skills more typically applied to other sectors, such as usability for healthcare device development, has radically enhanced the final outcome.”
Tina Gray, Global Head of R&D, Mayborn Group, Tommee Tippee® said: “Developing a breakthrough product like this has been helped significantly by working with Cambridge Design Partnership’s integrated design, engineering and human factors teams. In less than 18 months, they have taken the product from basic concept to a market ready product.”
The product has recently been launched in the USA and is now on sale exclusively in Babies R Us stores across the US, with a global roll out planned in 2014.
